Words to minutes calculator: how to use it

  1. Paste your script into the box, or type a plain number such as 150 if you already know the word count. The tool counts the words for you when you paste text.
  2. Choose a speaking pace: slow (120 words a minute), average (150) or fast (180). The time to say the script updates at once, shown as minutes and seconds.
  3. Check the list under it to see how many words fit in 15 seconds, 30 seconds and 1 minute at the pace you picked, then cut or add lines to match your video.

Example

Written by hand to show the format. Your result will be different.

You type
A 60-word script for a vertical video, read at the average pace
You get something like
60 words take about 0:24 to say at 150 words a minute. For a 15-second video, the same pace fits about 38 words, so the script needs to lose about 22.

Tips

  • Read the script aloud once with a timer. About 150 words a minute is a common figure for everyday English speech, but your own voice, pauses and language can be slower or faster.
  • Leave room for breathing and on-screen moments. A script that fills every second sounds rushed, so aim a little under the word count shown for your length.
  • Pick the pace that matches the voice you will use. A calm narrator sits near the slow setting, while an energetic voiceover for a Short often lands near the fast one.

Questions

How many words fit in a 15-second video?

About 38 words at 150 words a minute, about 30 at a slow 120 and about 45 at a fast 180. Short videos need fewer words than most people first write.

How many words are in a one-minute script?

Around 150 at an average pace. A slow, careful delivery is closer to 120 words, and a quick, upbeat one can reach 180.

Does the tool work for languages other than English?

The word count works for any language that puts spaces between words. Speaking speed differs between languages, so time yourself once and pick the pace closest to your result.
