Mystery series: a faceless Shorts niche

By the Mubuz team · Published

A mystery series is the easiest story channel to keep going. Fix one place and one person, and let something new arrive each episode: a stranger, a letter, a light in a window. The place makes every episode recognisable; the new arrival makes each one different.

The format: fixed place, new arrival

A lift, a lighthouse, a night bus, a lost-property office. Choose a place with a door that opens, because each episode starts when someone or something comes through it.

Keep the big question open for a whole season and answer one small question in each episode. Viewers stay for the small answers and come back for the big one.

Our own test series is a night lift operator. The same idea typed into the free story plot generator on the live site gave this, unedited:

  • Title: Elevator Nights
  • 1. Nora tends the night lift in a sleepy old apartment tower, a small woman with a scar on her thumb and a thermos of tea at her side.
  • 2. Every stop brings a new stranger—one with a paper boat, another who hums an unfinished lullaby—and they vanish before the doors open, leaving tiny clues that puzzle Nora.
  • 3. One night a stranger steps in who seems to know the building's history and Nora's secret: the scar on her thumb hides a key no one else remembers.
  • 4. At the thirteenth press the stranger offers her a choice—return the key to its locked door or unlock whatever she's been avoiding for years—and Nora slides the key into the panel, holding her breath.
  • 5. The doors open onto a hallway that looks like Nora's childhood street, and as a fresh ding promises a different stranger on the next floor Nora steps forward, the elevator light winking out and the story pausing for the next night.

Hooks for the same series

  • What would you do if a new stranger boarded your elevator each floor?
  • I meet a new stranger on every floor — none are who they seem.
  • You won't believe who stepped in on the thirteenth floor last night.
  • Floor by floor: five encounters before dawn. Can you guess their secrets?
  • The elevator doors close, and someone I don't remember greets me.
  • Which floor will bring kindness, danger, or a lie tonight?
  • By sunrise I'll know more secrets than the whole building combined.
  • This elevator has rules: never ask names. Tonight, I broke one.

Why this format keeps ads on

YouTube does not monetize channels "where content feels interchangeable from video to video", and says the substance of each video "should be materially varied". In a mystery series that is built in: a new floor, a new stranger, a new outcome every time.

Posting rhythm and titles

  • Daily at a fixed hour. Mysteries reward a habit.
  • Name the arrival in the title: "Floor 9: the man with no reflection", "The letter with tomorrow's date".
  • End the caption with the next floor or the next clue, never with the answer.

Questions

How many episodes should a mystery season have?

Mubuz writes up to 10 episodes per series. Ten small mysteries with one big one behind them is a good first season.
