Mythology retold: a faceless Shorts niche

By the Mubuz team · Published

Myths are the oldest stories we have, and the best-known heroes in them belong to no one: Perseus, Thor, Isis and Anansi are free to retell. A mythology channel never runs out of material. Its job is to make a 3,000-year-old story feel like it happened last night.

Why myths work as a series

Myths come in cycles. The labours of Heracles, the trials of Perseus, the days before Ragnarok: each cycle is already a season of episodes with one hero, a clear goal and a cliffhanger built in.

Retell, do not copy. The myth is old, but a translation or a modern book about it can still be under copyright. Tell it in your own words, with your own character design and your own ending line.

  • Title: Perseus and the Mirror Shield
  • 1. Perseus, a young hero with a braided cloak and a gleaming shield, stands at the mouth of a wind-swept cave where stone statues glint in moonlight.
  • 2. His task is simple-sounding but deadly: reach the heart of the cavern to confront Medusa, whose direct gaze turns anyone to cold stone.
  • 3. The mirror on his shield is not ordinary — when he lifts it, the reflection shows not only Medusa but the memory of a frightened woman bound by a curse, and a faint pulse of light at the cave's center that could undo it.
  • 4. Holding the shield like a second face, Perseus avoids direct eye contact and carefully angles the reflection to reach the pulsing light, speaking a quiet question that tests whether he'll strike or try to heal.
  • 5. As a shimmer spreads through the statues and Medusa's expression shifts, Perseus must choose; the cave exhales and a new sound echoes from deeper inside, promising a surprising answer in the next episode.

Make it yours

YouTube allows "using AI to visualize a unique character and narrative you invented" and does not allow "AI-generated content made with generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production". A myth channel stays on the right side by choosing a voice: the funny one, the dark one, the one told from the monster's side.

In Mubuz you keep one character design for the whole series, so your Perseus looks the same in every episode. Pick an art style once (3D animated, anime, realistic, 2D cartoon, claymation or comic) and keep it.

Posting rhythm and titles

  • One cycle at a time: ten episodes of one hero, then a new hero. Viewers follow a hero, not a mythology.
  • Titles that name the hero and the danger: "Perseus vs the gaze of Medusa", "Why Thor lost to an old woman".
  • Pin a comment with the next myth so viewers know what is coming.

Questions

Is it legal to retell Greek myths on YouTube?

The myths themselves are far out of copyright. A particular modern translation, film or book may not be, so tell the story in your own words and with your own pictures.

Which mythology works best?

Start with the one your viewers half know, such as Greek or Norse, and add less-known ones (Egyptian, Yoruba, Japanese) once the channel has followers.
